ECHO- Envolver os cidadãos na ciência do solo: o caminho para solos mais saudáveis

O Projeto ECHO visa envolver e capacitar cidadãos da UE a fim de melhorar a saúde do solo. É uma iniciativa inovadora destinada a aumentar o conhecimento e a consciencialização sobre a saúde do solo entre os cidadãos. O projeto assenta em três princípios fundamentais: envolver os cidadãos, capacitá-los com conhecimento para um papel ativo na recolha de dados e capacitá-los para participar na tomada de decisões sobre questões relacionadas com o solo.

O Projeto “ECHO” teve a sua primeira reunião em Bolzano. Em sequência, foi emitido um comunicado que passamos a divulgar:

  • O solo é um recurso vital que sustenta a vida na Terra, mas é muitas vezes negligenciado; é a base para a agricultura, floresta e para vários ecossistemas. A degradação do solo é, todavia, uma preocupação crescente em todo o mundo e pode ter consequências graves para o nosso planeta, como a redução do rendimento das colheitas, o aumento das emissões de gases com  efeito estufa e a diminuição da biodiversidade. O ECHO pretende contribuir para a mudança, reunindo cidadãos e cientistas, voluntariamente, de toda a Europa para trabalhar em prol de um objetivo comum: proteger e preservar os nossos solos, contribuindo assim para a transição para solos saudáveis, que é um dos desígnios da Missão da UE: “A Soil Deal for Europe”.
  • O ECHO irá gerar novos dados sobre o estado de saúde dos solos da UE, complementando o mapeamento e monitorização dos solos existentes nos Estados-Membros, incluindo o Observatório dos Solos (EUSO). O projeto desenvolverá e implantará 28 iniciativas baseadas na ciência da cidadania, nos diversos países, considerando os diferentes usos da terra, tipos de solo e regiões biogeográficas, bem como as necessidades dos seus utilizadores. Com 16 participantes de toda a Europa, o ECHO avaliará 16.500 locais em diferentes climas e regiões biogeográficas para alcançar as suas ambiciosas metas.
  • Os cidadãos irão, assim, não apenas contribuir ativamente para a recolha de dados para o  projeto, mas também promover a gestão do solo e promover mudanças comportamentais relacionadas com o mesmo, em toda a UE. Os dados serão exploração não apenas por cientistas, mas também pelo público em geral, decisores políticos, agricultores, proprietários de terra e outros utilizadores finais, enriquecendo os dados existentes e a capacidade de monitorizar o estado deste recurso vital. O ECHOREPO fornecerá assim informações valiosas sobre o estado de saúde do solo em várias regiões, passíveis de ser utilizadas para fins múltiplos.
  • O ECHO reconhece os desafios relacionados com a  idade, cultura, profissão e idioma dos cidadãos – tentará, através da co-criação e de grupos alvo, superar essas limitações.
  • Acreditamos que o projeto ECHO terá um impacto significativo na saúde do solo e no envolvimento dos cidadãos em toda a UE e que se tornará um contributo importante para o proteger e preservar, e o inerente legado para as próximas gerações. Trabalhando juntos, podemos garantir que nosso solo permaneça saudável e produtivo e que continuemos a desfrutar dos muitos benefícios que ele oferece.
  • ECHO é uma Ação de Investigação e Inovação financiada pela União Europeia, ao abrigo do GA 101112869, Programa Horizonte Europa tópico HORIZON-MISS-2022-SOIL-01-09. O projeto teve início em 1º de junho de 2023 e terá duração de 4 anos. O consórcio ECHO é composto por 16 participantes: 10 universidades e centros de investigação (Universidade Livre de Bolzano-Bozen, Universidade de Hohenheim FCIENCIAS.ID e Universidade de Lisboa, Universidade de Bolonha, Hutton Institute University of Eastern Finland American Farm School, University Stefan Cel Mare Suceava, Universidade da Extremadura), 4 PME (Solutopus, Lda., Plantpress, Quanta Labs, Ambienta) e 2 Fundações (Ibercivis, Resoil). Os participantes de empresas e fundações, como representantes diretos da sociedade civil, complementam os especialistas em solo e ciências sociais dos parceiros académicos e são cruciais para alcançar as ambiciosas metas do ECHO.

ECHO - Engaging Citizens in soil science: the road to Healthier Soils

The ECHO Project aims at Engaging, Empowering and Enabli EU Citizens to Improve Soil Health. It is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at increasing knowledge and awareness of soil health among EU citizens. The project is based on three main principles: engaging citizens, empowering them with knowledge and an active role in data collection, and enabling them to participate in decision-making on soil issues.

  • Soil is a vital, yet often disregarded, resource that supports life on Earth by providing the foundation for agriculture, forests, and various other natural ecosystems. However, soil degradation is a growing concern around the world, and it can have severe consequences for our planet like reduced crop yields, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and decreased biodiversity. ECHO aims to prevent this by bringing together citizens and volunteer scientists from around Europe to work towards a common goal of protecting and preserving our soils, thus contributing to the transition towards healthy soils of the EU Mission: “A Soil Deal for Europe”.
  • ECHO will generate new data on the health status of EU soils, complementing existing soil mapping and monitoring in EU Member States, including the EU Soil Observatory (EUSO). The project will develop and deploy 28 tailor-made citizen science initiatives across EU Member States, taking into account different land-uses, soil types, and biogeographical regions, as well as stakeholder needs. With 16 participants from all over Europe, ECHO will assess 16,500 sites in different climate and biogeographic regions to achieve its ambitious goals.
  • The project aims to engage citizens in protecting and restoring soils by building their capacities and enhancing their knowledge. Citizens will thereby not only actively contribute to the project’s data collection but also promote soil stewardship and foster behavioural change across the EU The ECHOREPO, a long-term open access repository with a direct link to the EUSO, will make the citizen science data available for exploitation not only by scientists but also by the general public, policy makers, farmers, landowners and other end-users, providing added value to existing data and other relevant soil monitoring initiatives. ECHOREPO will thus provide valuable information about the state of soil health in various regions, and help citizens make informed decisions about land use and conservation.
  • ECHO recognises challenges related to citizens’ age, culture, background, and language and will overcome them through co-creation with target societal groups. The project will result in increased soil literacy across Member States, enabling citizens to directly participate in decision-making on soil issues. By involving citizens in the project, ECHO will foster a sense of responsibility and ownership towards the environment and encourage everyone to take action to protect soils.
  • We believe that the ECHO project will have a significant impact on soil health and citizen engagement across the EU and become an important step towards protecting and preserving our soil for future generations. By working together, we can ensure that our soil remains healthy and productive, and that we continue to enjoy the many benefits it provides.
  • ECHO is a Research and Innovation Action funded by the European Union, under the GA 101112869, Program Horizon Europe topic HORIZON-MISS-2022-SOIL-01-09. The project started on June, 1st 2023 and will last 4 years. The ECHO consortium consists of 16 participants: 10 leading universities and research centres (Free University of Bolzano-Bozen, University of Hohenheim FCIENCIAS.ID and University of Lisboa, University of Bologna, Hutton Institute University of Eastern Finland American Farm School, University Stefan Cel Mare Suceava, University of Extremadura), 4 SMEs (Solutopus, Lda., Plantpress, Quanta Labs, Ambienta), and 2 Foundations (Ibercivis, Resoil). The participants from small companies and foundations, as business and civil society representatives, are complementary to the soil and social sciences experts of academic partners and crucial for achieving the ambitious goals of ECHO.
